MAINTENANCE & SERVICE

Maintenance

In order to keep your equipment functioning efficiently and effectively it needs to be maintained.  You can help by changing your air filter on a monthly basis.  A large percentage of residential units that malfunction are due to neglect.  Keeping the filter new on a monthly basis will help the air flow of your system, reduce unwanted particles from slipping through your air duct system, and increase the life of your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the old and new refrigerants?

The old refrigerant is commonly referred to as R-22 or Freon. The new refrigerant is referred to as R-410A or puron. Puron/R-410A works similar to R-22, but does not contain the chlorine that can destroy the ozone layer.

Is there a fee for a service call?

Yes. You should expect to pay a diagnostic fee to cover the cost of the technician's visit to diagnose your problem and receive a quote for the repair options. You will be advised of the issue along with recommended options to correct it.

Is being low on refrigerant normal?

Air conditioners do not use up refrigerant and refrigerants do not wear out. If you are low, you have a leak somewhere in your equipment. Please give us a call and we would be happy to send out a service technician to find the leak and discuss repair or replacement options with you.

How do I know if my system is working properly?

Is it making strange noises? Is it cooling or heating all areas of your home sufficiently? Has it been taking longer to cool down or heat up? Have your utility bills been rising for no apparent reason? Any of these are signs that you may have a problem that needs service. In most cases, the longer you delay, the worse any underlying problems will get. So be sure to contact us to check out your system whenever you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Why does water come out next to my unit?

When your air conditioner is running, it pulls water out of the air for humidity control. This takes place in the evaporator coil. The air from your house is blown across the cold coil causing condensation to form, like when a cold glass sits out and water forms on the outside of the glass. This water goes into the condensate line. Over time dust, mold, and mildew will build up in the pipe and eventually it will stop the flow of water. It is important to have yearly maintenance done to make sure this line stays clear of debris.

Should I have maintenance done on my heater and air conditioner every year?

Yes! If you properly maintain your furnace and air conditioning units, you can get many more years of good service. Lack of maintenance is the number one cause of repairs and/or replacement of furnace and air conditioner parts. We have several maintenance plan options.

Why is my outdoor unit smoking or steaming and making a loud noise?

On a heat pump system during the heating cycle, the outdoor unit may form a layer of ice on it. When this happens, the system will go into a defrost cycle to melt the ice. What you are seeing and hearing is normal operation during the defrost cycle.

It is normal for my heat pump unit to make a whooshing noise and blow cold air sometimes?

Yes. During the cold weather months, frost will accumulate on the outdoor coil. This will cause the heat pump to go into a defrost cycle anywhere from 1-10 minutes, depending on the amount of ice on the coil. The system will return to the heating mode once the ice is gone.

How much does a new system cost?

Due to the many different makes, models and customer needs, price is an issue that can only be solved by doing a thorough evaluation of your home and existing equipment. There is no charge for an in-house replacement proposal. We accept many forms of payment including credit cards, and financing is available.

What is the average life expectancy of a system?

Most systems have a lifetime of around 10 years. As your equipment gets older, its efficiency can decrease dramatically. You may notice that it gets noisier and needs repairs more often. When a unit begins to show its age, you have two choices -- You can overhaul the system or replace it. Because heating and cooling technologies improve over time, a new system designed with newer, more energy-efficient equipment makes sense, especially if your system is 7 or more years old.
